Description
So-called Carolina Wild Petunia (or Ruellia), Ruellia caroliniensis, one of the few naturally-occurring native wildflowers in my suburban Piedmont yard. It even comes up as a lawn weed! The flowers open in the morning and seldom last the day--the corolla is ordinarily kicked off by the first large pollinator to visit--usually bumblebees, in my observation. On a day with uniform high clouds, the natural light was just right for this one. The colors are very delicate--rather a lavender to pink, and are easily washed out by any sunlight. I underexposed a bit (1/3 stop) on this one to avoid washing out the color. Links: USDA Plants  Ruellia_caroliniensisPCCA20070602-2925A-f6-3
