Abstract:

In the region covered there are some 1335 spp. and 41 vars. Of these, 361 are found also in Mexico; 105 are in the West Indies and 195 are recorded as well for South America. A handful of spp. extend their range into the U. S., and 2 or 3 are found in Africa. Of the countries here considered, Guatemala has 511 recorded taxa, in 86 genera; British Honduras, 97, in 38 genera; El Salvador, 100, in 41 genera; Honduras, 332, in 73 genera; Nicaragua, 139, in 45 genera; Costa Rica, 907, in 108 genera; and Panama, 474, in 88 genera. Brief accounts are given of 13 orchid specialists who have worked with the region, and a brief "Special bibliography" is included. The annotated list includes the origin reference in each case, with list of countries where the sp. occurs, and some-times comment on synonymy, or brief descriptive comments. Sobralia. wercklei (Fregea w. Schltr.) and Stelis. obliquipetala (Physosiphon obliquipetalus A. and S.) are included.
