Description | Maiapio, Pua pilo or Hawaiian caper Capparidaceae Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands Status: Vulnerable Kalaeloa, Oʻahu The beautiful flowers have a fragrance described as having a lemony scent. Flowers open at night and remain throughout the morning until around noon when they fade to a rose color and soon drop off. Maiapilo was apparently used medicinally for healing fractured or broken bones by early Hawaiians. The whole plant would be pounded and applied to body joints, never to the injured area. The milky sap mixed with other ingredients was applied externally to treat boils. NPH00005 nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plant/view/Capparis_sandwichiana |
