Description
In the Gulf Stream off of Hatteras, North Carolina. This bird had come right up to the boat for some chum and, in this case, I was able to catch it in the frame before it bounded off. Their motion on the water is something to see--the flutter and "walk" along the surface. (Oh, "Petrel" refers to Saint Peter, and the biblical story of him walking on the water, see Wikipedia. That is interesting!)I'm quite happy with this photo, but check out that of another participant, Lana Hays--her similar photo (go to the seabird gallery--a direct link does not work.) Lana is a very experienced bird photographer, and I am just in awe of her work. I noticed a couple of her techniques -use of a better digital SLR (more autofocus points)-incident light metering--setting the exposure manually on the camera--the shiny water surface made auto-exposure tough--I was compensating by over-exposing just a bit, gambling that the water was usually brighter than a neutral gray. -Lana was also shooting RAW images, which helps a great deal with difficult exposures. Shooting RAW files is something I need to learn for this sort of demanding subject. (That was another real great feature of this trip--the opportunity to see better photographers at work and learn from them.)Oceanites_oceanicusPCCA20070623-3634A
