Pocas palmas con púas tienen un tronco solitario y cilíndrico. Adicionalmente las púas en A. alatum son aplanadas, bastante grandes y relativamente poco densas. Las otras dos especies del género en Costa Rica (A. confertum y A. standleyanum) son más grandes y de hojas mucho más pinnadas.

Few palms with thorns have a solitary, cylindrical stem. Also, thorns in A. alatum are flat, relatively big and not so dense. The other two species in the genera Astrocaryum  in Costa Rica (A. confertum and A. standleyanum) are bigger and leaves are more pinnate.
