Sub-arbustos, arbustos escandentes o lianas. Hojas alternas, pecioladas; láminas simples; estípulas ausentes. Flores bisexuales o funcionalmente unisexuales; agregadas en cimas las cuales están dispuestas en panículas terminales o axilares. Tépalos 5, ovados o lanceolados, libres; estambres 5, los filamentos unidos en la base para formar un corto tubo estaminal; apéndices interestaminales ausentes; ovario súpero, unilocular, uniovulado, el estilo corto, con 2 ó 3 estigmas. Fruto, un utrículo membranáceo, circuncísil; semilla única, a veces cubierta por un arilodio carnoso. Género con 2 especies ampliamente distribuidas en el neotrópico, desde México hasta el norte de Argentina, incluyendo las Antillas.

Tepals 5, ovate or lanceolate, free; stamens 5, the filaments united at the base to form a short staminal tube; interstaminal appendages absent; ovary superior, unilocular, uniovulate, the style short, with 2 or 3 stigmas. Fruit a membranaceous, circumscissile utricle; seed solitary, sometimes covered by a fleshy arillode. A genus of 2 species, widely distributed in the Neotropics, from Mexico to northern Argentina, including the Antilles.
