Hierbas erectas o sarmentosas, arbustos escandentes o lianas volubles. Hojas opuestas, pecioladas; láminas simples, estípulas ausentes. Flores bisexuales, dispuestas en glomérulos, espigas o panículas axilares o terminales en cortas ramas axilares; brácteas y bractéolas persistentes. Tépalos 5, libres, cóncavos, con un mechón de pelos en la base de la superficie externa o los pelos naciendo del pedicelo; estambres 5, los filamentos unidos en la base para formar un corto tubo estaminal; apéndices interestaminales presentes o ausentes; ovario súpero, unilocular, uniovulado, ovoide, el estigma bilobado, sésil o subsésil. Fruto un utrículo indehiscente, cubierto por el perianto. Género con aproximadamente 35 especies de distribución neotropical.

Tepals 5, free, concave, with a tuft of hairs at the base on the outer surface or the hairs borne on the pedicel; stamens 5, the filaments united at the base to form a short staminal tube; interstaminal appendages present or absent; ovary superior, unilocular, uniovulate, ovoid, the stigma bilobed, sessile or subsessile. Fruit an indehiscent utricle, covered by the perianth. A genus of approximately 35 species of neotropical distribution.

Pfaffia [1][2] (syn. Hebantha Mart., Hebanthe Mart. [3]) is a genus of plants in the family Amaranthaceae. This genus is sometimes placed in Chenopodiaceae family.
