The geographical distribution of Cojoba rufescens exceeds the 20,000 km2 threshold for a threatened category under criterion B. The taxon is also known to occur within in the protected areas network and is considered to be relatively abundant. Despite general threats to the habitat C. rufescens is not considered to be threatened or in decline at present thus a rating of Least Concern is given.
