Arbol de 6 a 13 m. de altura. Ramitas ferrugíneo-pubescentes.Las hojas son simples, alternas, dísticas, con dimensiones de 5 a 18 por 3 a 6 cm., de elípticas a oblongas. Apice agudo o abruptamente acuminado.
Flores en su mayoría solitarias en las axilas de las hojas. Tres pétalos externos de 1.2 a 1.5 por 0.8 cm., color de verdoso a amarillo pálido. Frutos apocárpicos, hasta con 13 monocarpos, de 1.8 a 2 por 1 a 1.1 cm., elipsoidales, negros cuando están maduros, corto estipitados (5 mm.). Cuentan con 1 semilla, de color pardo y rugosa. Esta especie se caracteriza por su ramitas ferrugíneo pubescentes, y porque sus flores presentan pétalos casi redondeados. Se podría confundir con Guatteria costaricensis, pero esta muestra hojas asimétricas y frutos más pequeños.Syntype for Guatteria oliviformis Donn. Sm.
