Genus Mammalaria has a presence in South America, North America, Mesoamerica and the Caribbean Basin. North American occurrences are limited to Mexico and the southwestern USA, with the center of genus diversity lying within Mexico. South American occurrences are restricted to the northern continent, particularly Venezuela and Colombia.

La especie esta dentro de la Reserva de la Biosfera El Vizcaíno la cual tiene su programa de manejo (INE, 2000), sin embargo de manera particular la especie no esta considerada en alguna acción especifica de conservación. También, se encuentra en el Area Natural Protegida "Valle de los Cirios", la cual no cuenta con su programa de manejo.
