Crece en bosque húmedo y muy húmedo siempreverde, entre los 50-600 m de elevación, con una precipitación mayor a los 2500 mm anuales, por lo general en zonas planas, así como en lomas o áreas bien drenadas y con pendientes entre 10-40 %.
Ecología:
Especie heliófita, a veces emergente, que generalmente alcanza el dosel, abundante en algunas áreas de la Península de Osa como la Reserva Forestal de Golfo Dulce, río Esquinas y Golfito; disminuyendo su abundancia conforme se extiende al norte hasta la Reserva Biológica Carara. Su regeneración es escasa, sin embargo, a veces se observan árboles en edades intermedias, que crecen en tacotales o bosques secundarios. Se asocia con especies como aceituno (Simarouba amara), nazareno (Peltogyne purpurea), ajo (Caryocar costaricense), etc.
Se reproduce por semilla. No se han realizado ensayos de germinación en vivero.

ESPECIE AMENAZADA. Escasa. Incluída en la lista de plantas amenazadas y poco comunes de Costa Rica (UICN, 1988). Se encuentra protegida en el Área de Conservación Pacífico Central (Reserva Biológica Carara, Zona Protectora la Cangreja-Puriscal) y Área de Conservación Osa (Parque Nacional Corcovado, Refugio de Vida Silvestre Golfito y Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce).
