Whole plant: Among the Surinam Tirio the smoke from a burning plant is inhaled, and ashes rubbed on cheeks of person afflicted with dizziness or "crazy head", the latter perhaps being insanity or epilepsy. The Surinam Wayana wash hands and feet in a decoction of the boiled plant to treat pain and possibly cramps.
Hymenophyllum helicoideum is a species of fern in the Hymenophyllaceae family. It is endemic to Ecuador. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Known only from the type collection made near San Nicols, on the Quito-Manab trail, perhaps in Pichincha province, Ecuador.
