Olyra
Monoecious herbs, perennial, caespitose; culms erect or creeping or climbing. Leaves with well developed auricles; ligules membranaceous; blade broad. Inflorescences paniculate, solitary or numerous at the upper nodes of the stem. Spikelets with a single flower; pistillate spikelets usually with a claviform pedicel, separating as a unit or the flowers separating from the glumes, the glumes acuminate or aristate, membranaceous, pluriveined, longer than the flower; flowers lanceolate or ovate, whitish, persistent; spikelets staminate, smaller than the pistillate ones, linear or lanceolate, hyaline, deciduous, the glumes usually absent; stamens 3.

Justification
Olyra longicaudatawas described from the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, India (McClelland 1842). This species is known from the Brahmaputra River drainage in India, river drainages in Myanmar and the Mae Khlong River drainage in western Thailand; the taxonomic status of the eastern and western populations requiredfurtherstudy. The population size and trend for this species remain unknown andthis species is only known from scanty museum records. Whilstthere is also very little information on the biology of this species and potential impacts of threats (especially those of an anthropogenic nature) and there is a question over the identity of the two populations, thespeciesis assessed as Least Concern at present as it has anapparentlywidedistributionwithin India and Myanmar.

Olyra is a genus of catfishes (order Siluriformes) of the family Bagridae.
Taxonomy[edit]
The genus Olyra is considered by some authorities to belong to the family Bagridae, though Olyridae is considered valid by Fishbase[1] and ITIS.[2]
The taxonomic status of O. colletii has been a puzzle. It was first described in 1881 by Franz Steindachner as Heptapterus collettii and marked as neotropical in origin. With examination, though, it was determined to more closely match members of Olyra. It may even be a junior synonym of Olyra longicaudata.[3]
O. kempi is treated in some literature as a synonym of O. longicaudata.[4]
Species[edit]
The 7 currently recognized species in this genus are:
- Olyra astrifera Arunachalam, Raja, Mayden & Chandran, 2013 [5]
- Olyra burmanica Day, 1872 (Longtail catfish)
- Olyra collettii Steindachner, 1881
- Olyra horae Prashad & Mukerji, 1929
- Olyra kempi Chaudhuri, 1912
- Olyra longicaudata McClelland, 1842
- Olyra saginata H. H. Ng, Lalramliana & Lalthanzara, 2014 [6]
Distribution and habitat[edit]
The genus Olyra occurs throughout South Asia and western Indochina, from India to western Thailand.[3]
Relationship to humans[edit]
In Asia, Olyra species are known as fighting catfish; they are placed in small aquaria to battle one another similar to Siamese fighting fish, and money is bet on the outcome.[7]

Major Threats
The threats to this species are unknown, since there is no information on the biology of this species and therefore the impact of potential threats (especially those of an anthropogenic nature) remains unknown. The current threats to aquatic biodiversity in all of its known distribution have also not been adequately identified.
