Centaurium Hill
EOL Text
Centaury is named after the Greek centaur Chiron, who was known for his skills in medicinal herbs. Like all centaurs, he was half horse, half man. And indeed, these plants were used as a remedy for stomach and liver troubles. The Dutch name 'thousand guilder herb' shows just how valuable this plant meant in olden days. Two species in particular grow in the dunes in the wadden and delta regions: seaside centaury and lesser centaury. Centaury flowers do not produce nectar and probably pollinate themselves in the process of closing.
