The species is widespread throughout tropical and subtropical countries worldwide.
It is recorded from central and southern Africa, and Asia. Its Asian distribution includes India (including the Andaman Islands), Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bhutan, Korea, Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Thailand (northern provinces (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Tak, Phitsanulok); northeastern provinces (Loei and Nong Khai); central provinces (Ktung Thep and Nakhon Nayok); and southeastern and southwestern provinces (Chon Buri, Trat, Prachuap Khiri Khan) (Hedge and Lamond 1992)), Malaysia, throughout southern Myanmar (Yangon, Insein, Bago, Pyinmana, Mandalay, Mottama (Tennaserim Division) to c.760 m), Nepal, Japan, and China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan, southern Jiangsu, Jiangxi, southern Shaanxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang provinces; eFloras 2011). It is also recorded from northern Australia and the south Pacific.
In Africa it occurs in Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Cote dIvoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe (African Plants Database).It is also recorded from the Arabian Peninsula in Saudi Arabia (Chaudhary 2001) andYemen (Wood 1997, Miller and Morris 2004).
In the Arabian Peninsula,the specieshas been recorded from Asir, Tannumah and near An Nimmas in Saudi Arabia (Chaudhary 2001) and At Turba, Dhamar, Wadi Habab, Ibb, Saada, Arhab and Socotra in Yemen (Wood 1997, Miller and Morris 2004).

Habitat and Ecology
This species is floating emergent or terrestrial. It is rather frequent in grassland, especially along riversides,chieflyin cultivated lands (Cook 1996). It is found in ponds and streamsides, evergreeen forests, fields, or as a garden weed, from 300-1,450 m (Hedge and Lamond 1992). It is found in shady, wet, grassy places, and river margins; from 2001,900 m (Flora of China, eFlora 2011) as well as flooded agricultural fields.
