Dalechampia

Twining vines or less frequently shrubs, monoecious, usually covered with stinging hairs, producing scarce watery latex when wounded. Leaves simple, alternate, 3-5-lobate, petiolate, with a pair of stipels at the base of the blade; stipules present. Flowers unisexual, actinomorphic, apetalous, clustered in bisexual cymes, with long peduncles and two foliaceous bracts, forming a pseudanthium. Staminate flowers in distal cymules; bracteoles with numerous resinous glands; calyx 4-6-valvate; stamens numerous, grouped on a short stipe to form a head, the anthers short, opening along longitudinal sutures; pistillode absent. Pistillate flowers in basal cymules; calyx with 8-12 lobes with glandular margins; ovary superior, trilobate, tricarpellate, each carpel with a solitary ovule, the style simple, with a capitate or peltate stigma. Fruit a trilobate capsule, with one seed per locule. A genus of about 100 species, mostly of the Neotropics.

Dalechampia

Bejucos volubles o con menos frecuencia arbustos, monoicos, usualmente cubiertos con pelos urticantes, produciendo poco látex acuoso al herirse. Hojas alternas, pecioladas; láminas simples, 3-5-lobadas, con un par de estipelas en la base; estípulas presentes. Flores unisexuales, actinomorfas, apétalas, agregadas en cimas bisexuales con largos pedúnculos y dos brácteas foliáceas formando un pseudanto. Flores estaminadas en címulas distales; bractéolas con numerosas glándulas resinosas; cáliz con 4-6 lóbulos; estambres numerosos, agrupados en una cabezuela que nace de un estípite corto, las anteras cortas, abriendo a lo largo de suturas longitudinales; pistilodio ausente. Flores pistiladas en címulas basales; cáliz con 8-12 lóbulos con márgenes glandulares; ovario súpero, trilobado, 3-carpelar, cada cárpelo con un óvulo solitario, el estilo simple con un estigma capitado o peltado. Fruto una cápsula trilobada con una semilla por lóculo. Género con alrededor de 100 especies, en su mayoría del neotrópico.

Dalechampia:

Dalechampia is a genus of plant of the family Euphorbiaceae and of the monogeneric subtribe Dalechampiinae. It widespread across lowland tropical areas (below 2,000 m ASL) primarily in the Americas with smaller numbers of species in Africa, Madagascar, and southern Asia.[1][2] Additional new species are still being described and several are very rare and at risk of extinction.[3][4][5][6]

Dalechampia has unisexual flowers that are secondarily united into bisexual blossoms (pseudanthia), which acts as the pollination units. The pollination and floral evolution of this genus have been studied more intensively than perhaps any other member of the euphorbia family. In the neotropics (Americas), most species are pollinated by resin-collecting female bees, including euglossine bees and Hypanthidium of the Megachilidae, which use resin in nest construction. About a dozen neotropical species are pollinated by fragrance-collecting male euglossine bees, which use these fragrances to attract females for mating. There are at least three independent pollination shifts from pollination by female resin-collecting bees to pollination by male fragrance-collecting bees. African and Asian species are also pollinated by resin-collecting megachilid bees, but Malagasy species are pollinated by pollen-feeding beetles and pollen-collecting bees.

Two species are of horticultural interest, having particularly showy blossoms with bright pink/purple bracts. One of these, D. aristolochiifolia, from Peru, has become very popular recently, but it is mistakenly advertised and distributed under the name D. dioscoreifolia.
