Doliocarpus

Lianas volubles. Tallos gruesos, a veces alcanzando 30 cm de diámetro; corte transversal con anillos concéntricos de xilema alternando con anillos concéntricos de parenquima. Hojas alternas, pecioladas; láminas simples, enteras o aserradas; estípulas ausentes o de corta duración. Flores bisexuales, actinomorfas, en fascículos o glomérulos. Cáliz de 3-6 sépalos libres, sub-iguales, generalmente los internos de mayor tamaño, imbricados, persistentes; corola blanca, con 2-6 pétalos libres, tempranamente deciduos; estambres numerosos, los filamentos desiguales, las anteras dehiscentes mediante suturas longitudinales; ovario súpero, unicarpelar, con dos óvulos basales, el estilo terminal, filiforme, el estigma punctiforme a peltado. Fruto una baya o cápsula con dehiscencia irregular; semillas usualmente 2, reniformes, negras, cubiertas por un ariloide blanco, membranáceo o carnoso. Género neotropical con alrededor de 40 especies.

Doliocarpus

Twining vines; stems thick, sometimes attaining 30 cm in diameter; cross section with concentric rings of xylem alternating with concentric rings of parenchyma. Leaves alternate, simple, entire or serrate, petiolate; stipules absent or of short duration. Inflorescences of fascicles or glomerules. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Calyx of 3-6 free sepals, subequal, generally the inner ones larger, imbricate, persistent; petals 2-6, free, early deciduous, white; stamens numerous, the filaments unequal, the anthers dehiscent by longitudinal sutures; ovary superior, unicarpellate, with two basal ovules, the style terminal, filiform, the stigma punctiform to peltate. Fruit a berry or capsule with irregular dehiscence; seeds usually 2, reniform, black, covered by a white arillode, membranaceous or fleshy. A neotropical genus of about 40 species.
