Lianas volubles, arbustos o árboles pequeños, usualmente con tricomas malpigiáceos. Hojas simples, enteras, opuestas, usualmente con depresiones glandulares en la lámina; pecíolos usualmente con un par de glándulas estipitadas; estípulas diminutas o ausentes. Flores bisexuales, en umbelas, corimbos o pseudoracimos axilares o terminales. Cáliz de 5 sépalos basalmente connatos, 4 de los cuales tienen un par de glándulas en la superficie externa o con menos frecuencia eglandulares; pétalos amarillos, rosados o blancos; estambres 10, desiguales, fértiles, los filamentos connatos en la base, las anteras elipsoides a oblongas; ovario súpero, de 3 carpelos connatos, los estilos 3, libres, erectos, gruesos. Fruto un esquizocarpo con tres mericarpos con un ala dorsal. Género con aproximadamente 125 especies distribuidas en su gran mayoría a través del neotrópico.

Twining vines, shrubs, or small trees, usually with malpighiaceous hairs. Leaves simple, entire, opposite, usually with glandular depressions on the blade; petioles usually with a pair of stipitate glands; stipules minute or absent. Flowers bisexual, in axillary or terminal umbels, corymbs, or pseudoracemes. Calyx of 5 basally connate sepals, 4 of which have a pair of glands on the outer surface, or less frequently eglandular. Petals yellow, pink, or white; stamens 10, unequal, fertile, the filaments connate at the base, the anthers ellipsoid to oblong; ovary superior, of 3 connate carpels, the styles 3, free, erect, thick. Fruit a schizocarp of 3 samaras with a dorsal wing. A genus of approximately 125 species, the great majority distributed throughout the Neotropics.

Heteropterys is a genus in the Malpighiaceae, a family of about 75 genera of flowering plants in the order Malpighiales. Heteropterys comprises over 140 species of woody vines, shrubs, and small trees found in the New World tropics and subtropics from northern Mexico and the West Indies to northern Argentina and southeastern Brazil. One widespread, mostly Caribbean species, H. leona, is also found in low wet places along the coast of West Africa from Senegal to Angola.[1]
Heteropterys aphrodisiaca O. Mach., endemic to the Brazilian scrubland regions, is traditionally used in folk medicine as an aphrodisiac, a stimulant and in the treatment of nervous weakness.[2] The herb has been found to reduce the toxic effects of cyclosporin A on rat testis,[3] increase tendon strength with endurance training in rats,[4] and improve memory in aged rats.[5] Additionally, an aliphatic nitro compound extracted from the root was found to have antimicrobial[6] and antiviral effects[7]in vitro.
