Maytenus Molina
EOL Text
Habitat and Ecology
The fasciculate flowers in the inflorescence are unusual in Maytenus in this area although the same structure is also found in M. undata, a species found in Yemen, Ethiopia, Somalia and widespread in tropical and southern Africa. However, the small leaves with entire margins arranged on short spur shoots and the presence of spines distinguishes the taxon on Soqotra from M. undata. M. artbutifolius has rather similar size and shape leaves but they are usually serrate and the inflorescence is clearly branched. In addition, M. arbutifolius is a much more spinose plant.

Cultivation and uses[edit]
M. boaria and M. magellanica are the most known species in Europe and the United States because these are the most cold-tolerant trees of this mostly tropical genus. The bark of M. krukovii has a variety of documented medicinal properties; it is also sometimes admixed into decoctions of ayahuasca.
