Bejucos herbáceos, monoicos, con zarcillos axilares; látex acuoso. Hojas alternas, pecioladas; láminas simples, enteras o lobadas; estípulas ausentes. Flores unisexuales, actinomorfas; cáliz crateriforme, con 5 diminutos lóbulos; corola campanulada, cortamente tubular, los lóbulos más o menos profundos, expandidos; flores estaminadas en racimos axilares; estambres 3, los filamentos libres, las anteras libres o concrescentes; flores pistiladas solitarias, con 3 estaminodios; ovario ínfero, ovoide o fusiforme, tricarpelar, el estilo corto, simple, los estigmas 3, lineares. Fruto una baya lisa, pequeña, ovoide o elipsoide; semillas numerosas, diminutas, sin arilo. Género neotropical con alrededor de 10 especies.

Flowers unisexual, actinomorphic; calyx crateriform, with 5 minute lobes; corolla campanulate, short-tubular, the lobes more or less deep, expanded; staminate flowers in axillary racemes; stamens 3, the filaments free, the anthers free or concrescent; pistillate flowers solitary, with 3 staminodia; ovary inferior, ovoid or fusiform, tricarpellate, the style short, simple, the stigmas 3, linear. Fruit a smooth berry, small, ovoid or ellipsoid; seeds numerous, minute, without an aril. A neotropical genus of about 10 species.
