Herbaceous or woody climbers. Leaves entire, ovate or circular, cordate; densely glandular beneath (the glands appearing as black dots in dried specimens). Inflorescences pedunculate cymes. Sepals 5, enlarging in fruit. Corolla red or purple, funnel-shaped. Fruit a spherical capsule, completely enclosed by the much enlarged calyx. Seeds 4, pubescent. Pericarp thin, breaking irregularly.

Stictocardia
Bejucos volubles, glabros o pubescentes, usualmente con poco látex lechoso. Hojas alternas, pecioladas; láminas simples, enteras, punteadas en el envés; estípulas ausentes. Flores bisexuales, actinomorfas, solitarias, o en cimas dicasiales simples, axilares. Cáliz con 5 sépalos subiguales; corola infundibuliforme; estambres 5, insertos, las anteras lanceoladas; ovario súpero, 2-locular, el estilo solitario con dos estigmas subglobosos, no exertos. Frutos indehiscentes, 4-loculares, con paredes fibrosas, tardíamente dehiscentes por disolución del pericarpio, cubiertos por los sépalos acrescentes; semillas 4 por fruto, obtusamente triangulares, aterciopeladas. Género paleotropical con alrededor de 12 especies.

Twining vines, glabrous or pubescent, usually with scarce milky latex. Leaves alternate, petiolate; blades simple, entire, punctate on the lower surface; stipules absent. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, solitary or in simple dichasial cymes, axillary. Calyx of 5 subequal sepals; corolla infundibuliform; stamens 5, inserted, the anthers lanceolate; ovary superior, 2-locular, the style solitary, with two subglobose stigmas, not exserted. Fruits indehiscent, 4-locular, with fibrous walls, tardily dehiscent by the dissolution of the pericarp, covered by the accrescent sepals; seeds 4 per fruit, obtusely triangular, velvety. A Paleotropical genus of about 12 species.
