Trailing or climbing perennial herbs. Leaves pinnately 3-foliolate. Flowers usually in pairs or clusters along axillary axes. Calyx 5-lobed, the upper pair fused or not. Standard glabrous apart from occasional hairs at the centre. Alternate stamens sterile, lacking anthers. Ovary with many ovules, often with a tuft of hairs at the apex surrounding the style. Style with a capitate stigma. Pods elongate, linear, distinctly upturned at the apex.

Bejucos herbáceos o poco leñosos, volubles, trepadores o rastreros. Hojas alternas, trifolioladas; estipelas diminutas; estípulas subuladas, persistentes. Flores bisexuales, zigomorfas, en pseudoracimos axilares, agrupadas en las hinchazones nudosas del raquis; brácteas pequeñas. Cáliz campanulado, con 4-5 lóbulos de tamaño similar; corola blanca, amarilla o lavanda, el estandarte obovado, las alas unguiculadas, la quilla más corta que las alas; estambres 10, monadelfos, las anteras desiguales; ovario súpero, unicarpelar, sésil, con numerosos óvulos, el estilo corto, pubescente, el estigma capitado. Fruto una legumbre linear, comprimida, curva en el ápice, dehiscente mediante valvas que se tuercen al abrir, las valvas septadas entre las semillas; semillas numerosas, comprimidas, oblongas. Género con 8 especies con distribución pantropical.
