En algunos lugares es común en las formaciones de bosque secundario. Alcanza diámetros de tamaño comercial, por su rápido crecimiento, buena regeneración y excelente porte; aún cuando se encuentre aislado, es factible manejarlo mediante la sucesión natural.

Distribucion en Costa Rica: Ampliamente distribuida en la zona norte, Vertiente Atlántica, Pacífico Central y Zona Sur (Pérez Zeledón, Golfito y Osa). Elevación entre 0-700 m.
Distribucion General: Panamá.
Árbol de 15 a 30 m de altura, ramitas glabras. Hojas simples, alternas, dísticas, de 10 a 18 cm de largo por 3.5 a 5 cm de ancho, oblongas o lanceolado-oblongas, ápice acuminado.
Flores, por lo general tres, opuestas a las hojas o saliendo un poco abajo del nudo; los 3 pétalos externos de 1.5 a 1.8 cm por 0.8 a 1 cm , en forma de hélice. Frutos agregados (sincárpicos), globosos, de 1.5 a 1.7 cm de diámetro, casi lisos y pubescentes.Es una especie muy variable en el tamaño de sus hojas. Se caracteriza por sus hojas alargadas, cuando frescas con una coloración blanquecina-grisácea en el envés y con un fruto pequeño.
