Apeiba tibourbou is a tree native to Caatinga and Cerrado vegetation in Brazil, and Costa Rica. It is used as an alternative fiber crop to make paper.

Distribucion en Costa Rica: En la Vertiente del Pacífico, desde la parte noroeste de la provincia de Guanacaste hasta el Valle del General. Elevación entre 0 - 1200 m.
Distribucion General: Sur de México hasta Panamá y Sur América.
Árbol o arbusto.
Árbol pequeño o arbusto, hasta de 13 m de altura. Hojas simples, alternas, dísticas, de 10 a 33 cm de largo por 5.5 a 15 cm de ancho, elípticas u ovadas, margen finamente denticulado o aserrado. Peciolos engrosados. Corteza fácilmente desprendible en tiras, savia mucilaginosa, los brotes jóvenes de la planta densamente indumentados por tricomas estrellados y simples.
Inflorescencias panículas de 8 a 10 cm de largo, pubescentes. Flores amarillas, hasta de 2.2 cm de largo http://darnis.inbio.ac.cr/FMPro?-db=imagenes3.fp3&key=37726&-img" > (ver imagen). Frutos cápsulas, de 3.5 a 4.5 cm de largo por 7 a 8 cm de ancho, aplanadas en los extremos, como en forma de disco, negras cuando maduras, cubiertas con numerosas "espinas", largas y flexibles.
