Range Description:

This species is native to the Lesser Antilles, Greater Antilles, Virgin Islands, Mexico, Central America and South America (Acevedo-Rodriguez 2012). The elevation range is not known.

Árbol de 8 a 15 m de altura, ramitas glabras. Hojas simples, alternas de 5.5 a 14 cm de largo por 3 a 7 cm de ancho, oblongo-obovadas a elípticas u obovadas, ápice agudo o corto-acuminado, glabras.

Inflorescencia terminal, cimosa de 7 a 15 cm de ancho. Flores amarillentas, de 4.5 a 6.9 mm de largo. Frutos drupáceos de 7.3 a 9.3 cm de largo por 5.5 a 7.3 mm de ancho, rojo-intenso cuando maduros, jugosos. Semilla muy dura. Esta especie ha sido confundida con Cordia eriostigma y viceversa, las diferencias más importantes son: hojas obovadas y flores unisexuales, relativamente más pequeñas con los lóbulos de la corola reflexos.

Habitat and Ecology

This species is a tree of 5-15 m in height with spreading branches. It grows in coastal forests, thickets, along roadsides and pasture margins (Liogier 1995, Adams 1972). Recent herbarium collections suggest it grows in disturbed areas.

Justification

Cordia collococcais a widespread Neotropical tree that is native to countries between Mexico and Venezuela. This species occurs in some protected areas and its seeds are under ex situ conservation at Kew's Millennium Seed Bank. It is not known to be subject to decline in population size and number of individuals. However, its suitable habitat is known to be threatened by urban development and tourism activities. This species is assessed as Least Concern.
