The main part of the species range occurs in Costa Rica, concentrated in the region of Ro San Juan and La Selva Biological Station in the north-west. In Panama collections have been made in Chiriqu, near the border with Costa Rica.

Distribucion en Costa Rica: Es conocido en la zona norte, región de Sarapiquí y las Llanuras de San Carlos, así como en la vertiente atlántica, elevación entre 30-100 m.
Distribucion General: Panamá.
Árbol o arbusto.
Árbol o arbusto de 4-8 m de altura; ramitas glabras. Hojas simples, alternas de 15-22 por 5-9 cm, elíptico-oblongas. Flores solitarias, pendulosas, pétalos de 2.6-3.6 por 1.7-2.4 cm, redondeados, gruesos y carnosos. Frutos apocárpicos, monocarpos hasta de 24, de (1,5-) 7,5-8 por 0.7-1.0 cm constrictos entre las semillas (semejando una vainica de frijol), con 1 a 10 semillas.
Vegetativamente es difícil de separar de Cymbopetalum costaricense http://guest:guest@darnis.inbio.ac.cr/FMPro?-DB=UBI&-lay=WebAll&-Format=/ubi/detail.html&-Op=bw&id=1368&-Find "> (Ver descripción) y las diferencias son principalmente a nivel de los frutos.Localidad del tipo: Costa Rica, Heredia.
