Bark: Bark is boiled, and the water drunk as an analgesic for back pain, by the Guyana Patamona. Bark is boiled, sugar added, and drunk as a beverage, and as a tonic, by the Guyana Patamona. Bark of trunk is depurative and antipyretic. Resin exuding from bark used for treating fresh wounds. Decocted bark tea is employed by the French Guiana Palikur for upset stomach; decoction for dysentery when mixed with barks of Humiria sp. and Manilkara sp.; boiled with other plants for bilious diarrhoea and for use as an aphrodisiac. Bark decoction or infusion for a carminative, vermifuge, purgative, dysentery and diarrhoea; bark infusion drunk for a good fatigue tonic and blood cleanser. Bark used as aphrodesiac and to treat coughs and colds in NW Guyana. Resin: Used as a cicatrizant and for pulmonary infections by the Guyana Patamona.. Fruit: French Guiana Wayapi use resinous secretion for dysentery.
Árbol hasta de 30 m de altura. Hojas bifolioladas, alternas, folíolos opuestos, sésiles, de 4 a 9 cm de largo, lanceolado-oblongos a oblongo-ovados, asimétricos, con abundantes puntos translúcidos a simple vista.
Inflorescencias panículas terminales, de hasta 12 cm de largo. Flores blancas, aromáticas. Frutos legumbres, de 5 a 15 cm de largo, ampliamente oblongos, indehiscentes, leñosos, superficie externa lenticelada, con la pulpa comestible.En América del Sur colectan una goma que exuda de la corteza y se acumula en el suelo y se utiliza en su mayoría en la manufactura de barnices especiales. En la madera el duramen es pardo-rojizo a menudo veteado y la albura es blanca. Es realmente dura, pesada de buena calidad, fuerte, resistente, sin olor, ni sabor. Se emplea en trabajos de construcción, carpintería, ebanistería y también para fabricar botes.
Un kilogramo de semillas contiene 250 unidades, 30 % de poder germinativo, la germinación se puede acelerar sumergiendo las semillas en agua hirviendo y luego en ácido sulfúrico. Es posible almacenarla durante un año a 21º C.Medicinalmente se ha usado en casos de asma, beriberi, blenorragia, bronquitis, catarros, cistitis, diarrea, dispepsia, fracturas, indigestión, laringitis, malaria, reumatismo, úlceras, enfermedades venéreas, dolores de cabeza, artritis, magulladuras, espasmos, como expectorante, licor, purgativo, sedativo, tónico estomacal, vermífugo y antiséptico.Localidad del tipo: Lectotipo: Plukenet, Phytographia t. 82, f. 3 (1691),designado por Lee & Langenheim, Univ. Hymenaea courbaril is a tropical hardwood and a globally important commodity for its use in furniture-making, ship building, plywood, interior trim, veneer and manufacture of wooden components. It also yeilds a gum which is mainly used as varnish.
