Se observa en orillas de caminos, bordes de bosque, ríos, vegetación secundaria. En climas de húmedos a muy húmedos.
En parcelas de una hectárea (16) en la zona norte del país, se registró una abundancia de un individuo/hectárea. Mientras que en 4 parcelas en la Península de Osa, se registró una abundancia de 4 individuos/hectárea.

Distribucion en Costa Rica: Ampliamente distribuida en ambas vertientes. Elevación 0-1460 m.

Árbol hasta de 15 m de altura; ramitas con pubescencia ferrugínea tomentosa a glabrecentes; estípulas 7-8 mm de largo, lanceoladas. Hojas con 3-4 pares de folíolos, oblanceolados a ovados, ápice agudo o redondeado, glabros o ferrugíneo-pubescentes en el envés, el par distal de 7-21 por 3-7 cm, par basal de 3-10 por 1.5-3.5 cm; raquis cilíndrico, glándulas interfoliolares sésiles y cónicas, en ocasiones ausentes en algunos pares distales http://darnis.inbio.ac.cr/FMPro?-db=imagenes.fp3&key=38746&-img" > (Ver fotografía) ; pecíolo cilíndrico.
Inflorescencias umbela, pedúnculo 1.5-5 cm de largo, ferrugíneo-pubescente, raquis floral 1 -2 cm de diámetro.Flores sésiles o con pedicelos hasta de 18 mm de largo; cáliz 2-7 mm de largo; corola 5-11 mm de largo. Frutos aplanados, 3-18 por 2-3 por 1.5 cm, ferrugíneo-pubescentes.Se reconoce por sus flores en umbelas, largo pediceladas, y su pubescencia ferrugínea densa. Además, los folíolos distales por lo general son obovados. En Costa Rica crece la subespecie quaternata, cuya distribución es amplia.
