Magnolia sororum occurs in Costa Rica and Panama where the extent of occurrence (EOO) is estimated to be around 20,000 km2.Specimens have also been recorded in the Bosawas Biosphere Reserve in Nicaragua and if this is confirmed the EOO will be around 60,000 km2.

Árbol.
Arboles de 5 a 12 m de altura, con ramitas jóvenes usualmente densamente pubescentes, de cilíndricas a subcilíndricas, con estípulas libres de los pecíolos.
Hojas de elípticas a oblongo-elípticas, de 9 a 16 por 3 a 8 cm, de anchamente agudas a subobtusas apicalmente, anchamente cuneadas basalmente. Indumento de pelos amarillos o dorados usualmente presentes en las ramitas. Estípulas, también en el envés de las hojas y frutos. Inflorescencias terminales, bisexuales. Carpelos libres, usualmente con 2 óvulos, pero pueden presentar hasta 3 ó 4. Frutos de 4.5 a 6 cm de largo, con los carpelos maduros dehiscentes longitudinalmente, y valvas persistentes. Se reconoce por sus hojas, con los nervios secundarios más fuertemente impresos, y generalmente cubiertas por pelos dorados o amarillos en el envés.Isotype for Magnolia sororum Seibert
