Reasons: The species is native of the West Indies and commonly cultivated throughout the tropics. It is presumed to be common in native habitat as well.
Seed: In French Guiana, an insecticide is made from the seeds which will repel ticks and sand fleas from the flooring of dwellings; rubbed on skin to repel lice. In Surinam, finely ground seeds are mixed with the sap and used to kill sand fleas ("sika") on the feet and skin. In NW Guyana, used to treat jiggers, fleas and lice.
