Árbol.
Árbol de 10 a 25 m de altura. Ramitas pálidas o pardo amarillento; estípulas deciduas. Hojas simples, alternas, oblongas, lanceoladas o elípticas, de 9-21(-28) por 3,5-12 cm, ápice de agudo a corto-acuminado, base de cuneada a obtusa, glabra o ligeramente pubescente en el haz y pubescente por el envés.
Flores solitarias, blancas, usualmente opuestas a las hojas, cáliz campanulado-cónico de 1,1 a 1,4 cm de largo. Frutos de ovoides a subglobosos, hasta 2 cm de diámetro, pubescentes, amarillos cuando maduros.
En árboles adultos la corteza exfolia completamente, dejando el fuste liso de un color grisáceo, por lo cual no podría confundirse con el surá (Terminalia oblonga, Combretaceae), cuyo fuste liso luego de exfoliarse es blancuzco.
DIAGNÁSTICO: Vegetativamente algunos ejemplares son muy semejantes a Quararibea costaricensis, sin embargo, poseen rangos de distribución y altitudes diferentes. Por lo general tiene tronco liso, oscuro, exfoliante, con las ramitas y hojas (por el envés) con diminutos pelos estrellados que le dan una coloración pardo pálido.
