Distribución: En bosques secundarios y matorrales costeros. Vieques (de acuerdo Liogier, 1995), St. John, St. Thomas (de acuerdo a Krebs, 1847) y Tortola; también en la Española, Antillas Menores, México, Centroamérica, Colombia, Venezuela y Ecuador.

Solanum lancifolium Jacq.
Bejuco leñoso, escandente, que se sostiene sobre otras plantas mediante espinas recurvadas y alcanza 2-6 m de largo. Tallos cilíndricos, estrellado-pubescentes, con pocas o numerosas espinas recurvadas, amarillentas. Hojas alternas; láminas 10-18 × 3.7-7 cm, lanceoladas, ovadas o elípticas, cartáceas, el ápice agudo, obtuso o acuminado, la base obtusa o redondeada, asimétrica, los márgenes enteros; haz opaco, con algunos pelos estrellados dispersos, con la nervación plana o poco prominente; envés verde claro, opaco, dispersamente estrellado-pubescente, con la nervación prominente, el nervio central con espinas amarillentas recurvadas; pecíolos estrellado-pubescentes, 1-5 cm de largo, usualmente con espinas recurvadas. Flores en racimos laterales, 2-4 cm de largo, estrellado-pubescentes; pedicelos estrellado-pubescentes, 1.5-1.7 cm de largo. Cáliz verde, campanulado, estrellado-pubescente, 4.5-5 mm de largo, con 5 sépalos subulados; corola blanca, rotácea, profundamente lobada, estrellado-pubescente en la superficie externa, el tubo ca. 1.5 mm de largo, los lóbulos 8-11 mm de largo, oblongos, oblongo-lanceolados u ovados, expandidos o levemente reflexos; anteras subuladas, conniventes, 6.2-6.5 mm de largo, amarillas; estilo proyectándose más allá de las anteras, el estigma capitado. Baya globosa, carnosa, rojo brillante o anaranjado al madurar, 0.9-1.3 cm de diámetro, glabra; semillas numerosas, circulares, comprimidas, amarillentas, 3.2-3.5 mm de diámetro.
Fenología: Coleccionada en flor y fruto de enero a agosto.
Estatus: Nativa, poco común.

Woody vine, scandent, that supports itself on the host plants by means of recurved spines and attains 2-6 m in length. Stems cylindrical, stellatepubescent, with few or numerous recurved spines, yellowish. Leaves alternate, 10-18 × 3.7-7 cm, lanceolate, ovate, or elliptical, chartaceous, the apex acute, obtuse, or acuminate, the base obtuse or rounded, asymmetrical, the margins entire; upper surface dull, with some scattered stellate hairs, with the venation flat or slightly prominent; lower surface light green, dull, sparsely stellatepubescent, with prominent venation, the midvein with yellowish recurved spines; petioles stellatepubescent, 1-5 cm long, usually with recurved spines. Flowers in lateral racemes, 2-4 cm long, stellate-pubescent; pedicels stellate-pubescent, 1.5-1.7 cm long. Calyx green, campanulate, stellate-pubescent, 4.5-5 mm long, of 5 subulate sepals; corolla white, deeply lobate, stellatepubescent on the outer surface, the tube ca. 1.5 mm long, the lobes 8-11 mm long, oblong, oblonglanceolate, or ovate, expanded or slightly reflexed; anthers subulate, connivent, 6.2-6.5 mm long, yellow; style projecting beyond the anthers, the stigma capitate. Berry globose, fleshy, brilliant red or orange when ripe, 0.9-1.3 cm in diameter, glabrous. Seeds numerous, circular, flattened, yellowish, 3.2-3.5 mm in diameter.
Phenology: Collected in flower and fruit from January to August.
Status: Native, uncommon.
