Stemmadenia robinsonii Woodson

Se ha utilizado como árbol de sombra en las siembras de café en el Valle Central, aunque éste uso ha disminuído en las últimas décadas.
Distribucion en Costa Rica: Algo común en el Valle Central, cerros de Escazú, cerros de La Carpintera, Cartago, Valle del Candelaria, en la Cordillera de Tilarán (Monteverde), San Ramón, Acosta. Se encuentra a elevaciones de 1000 a 1800 m.
Distribucion General: De México a Colombia.
Árbol o arbusto.
Arbol o arbusto de 3 a 12 m. con ramitas glabras.
Hojas membranosas, elíptico-lanceoladas, de 8.5 a 24.5 cm. por 3.5 a 9 cm., caudado-acuminadas, cuneado-atenuadas en la base, pubescentes en el envés a lo largo del nervio central. Pecíolo de 0.5 a 2.5 cm. de longitud, glandular en las axilas. Inflorescencia cimosa, terminal o raramente axilar con 2 a 6 flores. Pedúnculo de 1.7 a 4.5 cm. Pedicelo de 0.6 a 1.5 cm. de largo. Bracteolas ovado-lanceoladas, acuminadas, de 4 a 6 mm. de longitud. Lóbulos del cáliz ovados u obovado-oblongos, desiguales, imbricados, con muchas glándulass en la base interna, de 0.9 a 1.7 cm. de largo. Corola hipocrateriforme, blanca con la garganta amarilla. Tubo de 5.8 a 7 cm. de longitud, con las crestas supraestaminales pubescentes. Garganta subtubular de 1.5 cm. de diámetro. Lóbulos oblícuamente obovados, de 2.9 a 4.6 cm. de largo. Estambres insertos en la base del tubo. Anteras de 6 a 7 mm. de longitud. Nectarios más o menos concrecentes, de longitud un poco mayor que la del ovario. Fruto de color verde-amarillo, ovoide, reniforme, de 4.5 a 6 cm. por 3 a 4 cm. Semillas rugosas, de 9 a 11 mm. de largo.
