Justification

This species has a wide distribution, with no known major widespread threats. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. It has also been assessed regionally as Least Concern for western Africa. The species is recorded from Mauritania, but more information is needed on the species distribution and status in the northern Africa region before an assessment can be made so it is categorised as Data Deficient. It is also assessed as Data Deficient in northeast Africa. It is estimated that less than 5 % of the species is found in the central Africa region, and it is therefore categorized as Not Applicable.

Biology:

Benthic species which occurs in deep water. Feed on plankton and crustaceans (Ref. 13851). Oviparous, eggs are unguarded (Ref. 205).

Range Description:

This is a wide-ranging species known from the Senegal/Mauretania border to Sudan.

Central Africa: In Lower Guinea it is known only from the Cross and Wouri River basins.

Northern Africa: It has been recorded from Mauritania.

Northeast Africa: It occurs in the upper White Nile.

Western Africa: This species is known from the basins of Chad, Niger, lower Senegal, Boubo, Bandama, Agnbi, Volta, Mono, Oum, Ogun and coastal lagoons of Nigeria and Cross.
